Byzantine silk was one of the most remarkable and important commodities of the Byzantine Empire. As an exotic material from China, silk woven in the Empire between the 4th and 15th century was extraordinarily unique in Europe at the time.
Byzantine silks are famed for their brilliant colours, use of gold thread, and intricate designs that rivalled even the finest loom woven fabrics. The most exquisite creations became known as SAMITE, and was associated with luxury and craftsmanship, and championed by the highest levels of noble and ecclesiastical society.
Celebrating “Silk as an Art”, unique silk scarves that are custom-made for the hotel adorn its walls in frames. Each with a unique story to tell, the scarves serve not only as decorative art pieces, but can also be purchased at the hotel’s showroom.
As a guests you are invited to create your own silk pieces using traditional stamp techniques, and experience first-hand the process of creating a personalized memorabilia. Wooden stamp blocks donated by the Silk Museum with traditional patterns and hand-woven silks will be available to customize your very own piece.
